As a conceptual orphan, strategic depth is prone to be victimized by the discourse of realpolitik, which is a fundamental feature of the politics of the real world. While the discourse of realpolitik has been well established in the post-Cold War era, there are multiple lenses, including with strategic depth, through which the discourse can be framed. These lenses are bound to cast light on the discourse of realpolitik and often result in clashes between the lenses. For example, the discourse of realpolitik can be framed with the lens of power. The discourse of power is framed with realism as a realist view of the world, and with geopolitical strategy as a geopolitical strategy. As a result, the discourse of power and the discourse of geopolitical strategy will result in an intellectual clash. Moreover, the discourse of power and geopolitics are themselves multiple and in a constant state of change, and are therefore prone to clash with the discourse of strategic depth. For example, the discourse of realpolitik is closely related to the notion of strength and weakness, and the discourse of power is framed by the notion of imbalance of power. In the discourse of power, being strong is equated with being powerful, while being weak is equated with being weak. This leads to a clash with the discourse of strategic depth, as in the latter being strong and weak are equated with good and bad, respectively. The discourse of realpolitik is indeed far-reaching and deeply embedded in the minds of policymakers. The discourse of geopolitical strategy has long been mainstreamed in the American national security discourse, and even in the economics of international relations. The discourse of strategic depth, however, does not have such a long pedigree in the mainstream and is not well-embedded in the minds of policymakers. As a result, the notion of realpolitik and that of geopolitical strategy are more likely to gain the upper hand over the discourse of strategic depth in the discourse of power in the post-Cold War era. Yet, as the discourse of strategic depth has been a perennial theme in the discourse of power, the discourse of realpolitik and that of geopolitical strategy are not likely to wholly supplant the discourse of strategic depth. The mainstream discourse of power will still be framed by the discourse of strategic depth, at least in the short-run.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
