This is another trend in Dark Souls, you can buy items to help you out with any situation. Weapons that are built for your current weapon type will give bonuses to attacks. For example, if you are using a Greatsword, and you want to use a Staff, that staff will give you a bonus to both attacks and spells using that weapon, but you can't use that Staff for different attacks at once.

The item called the Soul Orb is a simple item that can be placed on the ground which serves as a marker. You can then visit the Soul Orb and summon a Shade from it. Enemies in the area will then be destroyed, and you can collect their souls. However, enemies that come into the area of the Soul Orb are unable to move, but can attack.

Shades also appear in other player's towns, and you can kill them to collect their souls as well as increase your own total number of souls. You'll also find Soapstone Branches hanging in the woods, and these can be used to summon a Shade.

It is a nice change to have a hard fought battle forced to be a brief encounter as opposed to a lengthy one. It helps make the battles a little more meaningful, which in turn makes the game a lot more fun. If you can't summon a Shade, just travel to the Soul Orb and fight your enemies with your weapons.

Shades have a set of three skills, each with a set of levels. The first skill can have a variety of effects, including increasing the damage done by other skills, increasing the damage of attacks, increasing the effectiveness of defense, increasing the critical hits of other skills, increasing the casting speed, increasing the duration of the effect, or increasing the amount of souls you gain from defeating enemies.

Using several signs in a row will not grant a summon at a specific time, or even granting a summon from a specific sign will not grant a summon at a specific time. They still work and grant the souls they provide, but it will not be at the time you expect it.
