As earth science and geologists like it or not, the "Nova" islands are one of the places mastered well since the discovery of the Madagascar Archipelago by Philipp von Martius. The latter was particularly impressed by this discovery, made on November 28, 1826. Almost immediately, he knew these islands were located in the southern Indian Ocean at N 20°E/S 24°E. The problem is that these islands did not exist on maps published at the time, except on Mauritius Island, which he knew was in the south of Madagascar at 12°40'S 23°E/14°55'E. In the same period, Major Jules Dumont d'Urville realized there were other islands in the south of Madagascar but, apparently, he did not stay on these islands as he got caught in the Southern Ocean and forced to come back. If Martius had charted the islands located the other side of those of Mauritius, all this would have been well and they would have reached Madagascar by now. Soon the entire archipelago was charted, showing that those islands of Madagascar (now named in honor of the island of Erecte) were to be found in the south of this main island of Madagascar, all the way to the Antarctic Ocean at the latitude of 67°30'S! This long and memorable journey was made on February 16, 1831 by the French ship The Ile de la Passion. The two explorers from Mauritius, Dumont d'Urville and his second in command, Léonce de Pouy d'Uyterloo, took the opportunity to follow the opposite direction holding the north so as to finally reach Madagascar with the help of the sea. Their long and brave exploration succeeded in the South and they were able to meet. They was looking for the round the southern Indian Ocean, near the origin of the antarctic current and reaching Madagascar at the same time was very fortunate. They then traveled on Madagascar and crossed at the exact point which, a few months later, was reached by the French ship The Alerte to complete the discovery of the archipelago. These three explorers, Dumont d'Urville, Léonce de Pouy d'Uyterloo and Martius were and are considered as so many scientists, geologists and meteorologists. Their discoveries are barely known and are not cited by the majority of researchers. d2c66b5586
