"The Linux desktop is a highly variable collection of tools. Some incorporate features, like X, others use the command-line more frequently. Others go towards a more complete environment, like GNOME. "Early on, the community began to create such features."
"The license under which the original.exe version of Wine was released stipulated that it could only be installed and run on a computer running the version of Windows of the same name. Neither version of Alpha can be installed or run on Windows XP or Windows Vista: Wine Administrator requires the Service Pack 1 version of the Windows operating system. Alpha 2 supports Windows 98 (SP2)."
"A virtual machine (VM) is a method of implementing a virtual machine environment (aka full virtualization or just virtualization) in software, which makes it possible to run an entire computer system, as if it were a separate, standalone computer, without requiring any underlying hardware. Such a system uses resources from the host computer, but does not rely on specific hardware to function."
"A virtual machine, is a software implementation of a physical computer system. By definition, with traditional virtualization, the platform running on the software is called the guest, and the machine running that platform is the host. The guest is said to be virtualised from the host. The host provides resources needed for the guest, such as the processor, memory, operating system, and devices in cases where specialized hardware is required to properly support the guest. A virtualised host may use a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) to manage allocating resources to the guest." d2c66b5586
